This year marks a significant milestone\u2014the 130th anniversary of our school\u2019s founding. \nOver the past two decades, the environment surrounding Tono High School has changed dramatically, and so have the roles expected of us. Today, more than 60% of our students have connections to foreign countries, and diverse cultures are part of our everyday life. Each morning, as I greet students with \u201cGood morning!\u201d in Japanese, English, Portuguese, and Tagalog,\u00a0 I feel the energy and potential they bring to our school. These daily interactions remind me of our mission and the future we envision as we work together to shape school life.
\nWhen speaking to junior high schools, local residents, and visitors, I often say:
\n\u201cTono High School is truly a one-of-a-kind school that embodies multicultural coexistence.\u201d
\nI then add:
\n\u201cOur students are the source of our school\u2019s greatest strength and beauty. Here, young people from various cultural backgrounds come together, creating an environment rich in creativity and energy. This unique setting\u2014where different languages, customs, and perspectives intersect\u2014offers invaluable learning opportunities and fosters remarkable growth.\u201d
\nTo our students, I share this hope:
\n\u201cTake pride in the experiences and learning you gain here, and become individuals who will make a difference in society.\u00a0 Cherish the days you spent learning with your peers, and carry the spirit of \u2018TONO PRIDE\u2019<\/strong> <\/span>in your hearts.\u201d
\nIn March of Reiwa 7, we established our School Mission, which clearly defines our role:
\n\u201cAs a high school where students with diverse values, personalities, and cultural backgrounds learn and grow together, we aim to nurture individuals who will lead the next generation and contribute to their hometown through active learning and community-based education.\u201d
\nTo realize this mission, we must overcome the challenges we face today. Yet, I believe these challenges are, in fact, our greatest strengths. The \u201cpresent\u201d shaped by 130 years of history is an opportunity to drive positive change for the future.
